Gas fireplaces produce no creosote, which leads people to conclude they need nothing. They still burn fuel and vent combustion products, and the failure modes are less visible than a wood fire’s.
What a service covers
Checking the venting for blockage and integrity, cleaning the burner and pilot assembly, checking gas pressure and the flame pattern, testing the safety shut-offs, and checking the glass gasket on a direct-vent unit.
Flame appearance is diagnostic — a lazy yellow flame where it should be crisp indicates incomplete combustion.
What goes wrong
Spiders and insects nest in pilot assemblies and burner ports, which is common in Middle Tennessee and causes ignition faults every autumn.
Vents get blocked by birds’ nests and debris. Glass gaskets on sealed units degrade, which affects both efficiency and safe operation.

Carbon monoxide
Any fuel-burning appliance can produce it if combustion or venting is compromised, and gas appliances give no smoke to warn you.
A working carbon monoxide alarm on every level with a fuel appliance is not optional, and it should be tested rather than assumed.
Vented and vent-free
Vent-free units exhaust into the room and are restricted or prohibited in some jurisdictions and for some room types. They produce moisture as well as combustion products.
If you have one, room size, ventilation and a carbon monoxide alarm matter more rather than less.
