Fireplace Repair as our sweeps carry it out
A fireplace that smokes into the room is a draft problem, and draft problems have causes: a flue too large for the appliance, a blocked cap, negative pressure from a modern airtight house, or an opening too big for the flue serving it. Each has a different fix, and none of them is "burn better wood".
Modern houses are the common culprit and the least expected one. A tight, well-sealed house running a bathroom fan and a kitchen extractor can pull the chimney backwards. Sometimes the answer is a make-up air supply rather than anything wrong with the chimney at all.
Gas appliances still need annual service. They make no soot, so people assume there is nothing to do — meanwhile the thermocouple degrades, the ceramic cracks, and the flue can be blocked by a bird without anyone noticing until the CO alarm goes.
We test draft with the appliance actually running, with the house in its normal state. A cold test on a still day tells you very little.

FAQ
Asked about fireplace repair
Why does my fireplace smoke into the room?
The flue is not drawing — because it is blocked, because the damper is not fully open, because the house is so tight the fire has no air, or because the chimney is too short or the firebox opening too large for the flue. Sometimes it is the wind. Each has a different fix, from a sweep to a smoke guard to a top-sealing damper, and the diagnosis is a visit rather than a guess.
Can a wood fireplace be converted to gas?
Yes — with a vented gas log set in the existing firebox and flue, or with a gas insert that seals the opening and is far more efficient. A gas line is run by a licensed plumber, the flue is inspected first, and the damper is fixed open or replaced. It is one of the more popular conversions, and it removes the sweeping and the wood.
