Outdoor Fireplace Install in Nashville, Tennessee
Built outdoor fireplaces and chimneys that draw properly, footed and flued to code rather than stacked to look right.
Nashville's Chimney Sweep connects homeowners across Middle Tennessee with licensed, insured chimney sweeps for outdoor fireplace install. Estimates are free and written, the price is agreed before work starts, and the workmanship is backed in writing.
What the job usually involves
Every property is different, which is why the estimate comes after somebody has actually looked at it rather than before. What does not change is the process: assess, explain the options in plain language, put the scope and price in writing, then do the work to that scope.

- Sharp smell from the fireplace

What is included
What outdoor fireplace install covers.
- Site walk to settle position, prevailing wind and clearance to the house
- Footing dug and poured below frost, sized to the finished mass
- Firebox built in firebrick with refractory mortar, not face brick
- Flue and throat sized to the opening so it draws rather than smokes
- Chimney height carried above anything nearby that would spill air into it
- Hearth, mantel and veneer in the stone or brick you chose
- Gas line run and tested where you want gas rather than wood
- First fire lit with you there, and the draw checked before we leave
Outdoor Fireplace Install, in practice
An outdoor fireplace either draws or it smokes at the people sitting in front of it, and that is decided by numbers rather than looks: the ratio of the opening to the flue, the shape of the throat and the smoke shelf, and how high the chimney finishes relative to the house and the trees behind it. A structure built to a photograph and not to those numbers is a very expensive smoke machine.
It also has to be built as a structure. The mass of a masonry fireplace is measured in tons, so it gets its own footing below frost depth. Set one on a patio slab and it will move with the ground, open its joints and eventually lean.
The firebox is firebrick laid in refractory mortar. Ordinary brick and ordinary mortar will spall and crumble at the temperatures a fire actually reaches, and it fails from the inside where you will not see it until pieces are falling into the hearth.
We build for wood, gas, or wood with a gas starter, and the choice changes the flue and the plumbing, so it is settled before anything is dug rather than after.
